A message from The Prince of Wales, sent to the Prospect Burma Summer party, celebrating Aung Sang Suu Kyi's 71st birthday

Published on 19th June 2016

I am so pleased to extend my warmest good wishes to Prospect Burma on the occasion of your Summer party celebrating Aung Sang Suu Kyi’s 71st birthday.

Several years ago I invited some of Prospect Burma’s students to Clarence House in London and I could not have been more impressed by their intellect and commitment.  However, I was also deeply moved by their determination to make a difference to Burma’s future.  I know that Prospect Burma scholars are learning skills that will be vital to the rebuilding of their country.  One such scholar is Thant Sin Oo, who I understand is with you this evening.  His studies in Media and Development at S.O.A.S. will help to make education accessible throughout Burma.  It is hard to imagine a better example of how the award of a scholarship to one person can make a huge difference to the lives of many.  This, of course, is just one example of the vital contribution that Prospect Burma is making to the country's development.

I am delighted you are taking this time to celebrate the birthday of one of the world’s most courageous and determined champions of democracy, who has supported Prospect Burma throughout its twenty-seven years.

I wish you every continuing success and hope you have a very special evening.
